Iain MacGregor. 1941-2023. OB 1949-59

Details provided by Iain's brother, Hugh MacGregor 1959-1967

My brother lain MacGregor died peacefully at Rockingham Hospital on 3 September 2023, leaving Mavis, his wife for 27 years.

lain's parents were looking for a better alternative to the local school and found BGS Lower School where he started at age 8, later to play for the football team before moving up to the Upper School in 1952, where he was privileged to be part of the Lubbock Shield winning Bookers' rugby side under Bill Redwood. Iain was one of the first to study economics in the Sixth Form, but did not know what he wanted to do until a speaker came from Camborne School of Metalliferous Mining to lecture the Sixth Form, an hour that changed his life.

He attended Camborne School of Mines 1959-62 with his BGS friend, Paul Ashman, and then journeyed to Malaysia to undertake two 3 year tours of duty with Pahang Consolidated as a mining engineer, where he enjoyed the post colonial lifestyle, including playing tennis at the club and exploring the jungle. Thereafter he progressed his career in US, Tasmania, Indonesia and Australia where the confirmed bachelor surprised everyone by marrying Mavis at 55 years of age.

One of lain's claims to fame was to receive a detention in the Sixth Form for dropping milk bottles onto fresh tarmac from an upstairs window in Norwood's. He also avoided a beating when he was sure he had exceeded the maximum number of detentions in a term.
