Luke departed BGS from the Graveney Room at the start of 2020 with no idea what obstacles lay before him. Over 2 years later, he’s due to finish his 30,000km goal and is returning to Bristol Grammar School to cycle through the finish line.
Since 2018 Luke has been battling cancer and sadly also tragically lost his brother, fellow Old Bristolian John Grenfell Shaw whilst undertaking chemotherapy. Luke decided he wanted to continue to live richly and fully, going on to identiy as a canliver*. He set out to live his dream cycling from Bristol to Beijing on a tandem, joined by other CanLivers*, rewriting the narrative of what is possible with a cancer diagnosis. Luke wants to show that everyone can create opportunities for a rich and fulfilled life, even with cancer. Luke is sharing the journey with other people and he is raising £300,000 for five cancer-related charities.
*CanLiver - noun: canliver; plural noun: canlivers - A person living with cancer, facing uncertainty and challenge on a daily basis, yet acknowledging they can still live a rich and full life. “Luke Grenfell-Shaw is a canliver cycling 30,000km from Bristol to Beijing on a tandem bicycle with other canlivers.”
