What a day for Bristol Grammar School!

A £250,000 donation has been gifted by the son of an OB who was at BGS during the Second World War. The cheque was presented by Bill Godwin to a delighted Headmaster, Jaideep Barot.

This incredibly generous donation means that the new BGS 500 Campaign, to change lives through bursaries  has now reached over £1million in donations in its first year.

Bill, who never attended the school, has gifted the money in memory of his late father, Herbert James Godwin, (Jim) who won a scholarship to BGS and attended between 1932-1941. He also received a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge and latterly became a mathematics professor. He was respected academic with a reputation as “a scholar and a gentleman”. The HJ Godwin Bursary has now been created to support 100% bursaries and to promote a lifelong love for maths and learning. The gift will add considerably to funds raised by the BGS Community,  to support  the school’s Mission to provide outstanding education for those who might benefit, regardless of their background and financial means.
