Message from the Headmaster
Friday 9 September 2022
Dear Old Bristolians,
I am writing following the sad news of the death of Her Majesty the Queen. As Head of State she led by example, with kindness and integrity, for over 70 years and I know her loss is deeply felt by many in our community and around the world.
This morning both the Senior School and BGS Infants and Juniors held assemblies in which we came together to mark Her Majesty’s death and reflect on her extraordinary life. For Senior School pupils this was followed by time with their tutors, offering an opportunity to support those who may be struggling with emotions stirred up by Her Majesty’s death. In the coming days and weeks, we will continue to offer support to all our pupils as needed.
Bristol Grammar School has opened a Book of Condolence for all members of our community. If you would like to add your message of condolence to the book, you would be most welcome; please come to main reception who will direct you appropriately. (Reception is open Monday to Friday, from 8am–4pm).
As we enter a period of national mourning, we have cancelled this weekend’s sporting fixtures. Internal school events, such as the Year 7 House parties, will still take place as planned. Next weekend’s fixtures are under review, and it is possible that other external school events may be cancelled or postponed. In making these decisions we will be informed by any guidance from the Department for Education and the Cabinet Office. We will of course inform parents and guardians of any changes as soon as decisions have been made.
Her Majesty’s death marks a significant moment in history; for almost all of us she is the only monarch we have ever known. When speaking to the Senior School this morning, I reminded them of the need to show each other kindness and consideration as we process this momentous event and the changes it will bring. I am confident that they and the wider BGS community will respond, as they always do, with compassion and kindness.
Yours,
Jaideep Barot
