Andrew Frederick Dun. 1960-2023. BGS 1979.
Obituary by former staff Roger Cox, BGS 1973-2014
It is with huge sadness that I read of the sudden death of former Head Boy and 1st XV Captain Andy Dun.
My first contact with Andy was in 1975 when as a young assistant rugby coach to the school’s Junior Colts rugby team under the direction of Keith Howard, Andy was already an impressive player and captain of his year group’s team. In 1976 he moved from junior rugby straight into the School’s 1st XV at the age of 15. He made the transition with ease and proceeded to captain the 1st XV for 2 years in his Lower and Upper Sixth. In the late autumn of his final year he suffered a serious knee injury which threatened to curtail any chances of international schoolboy honours. However, he recovered sufficiently in the spring and summer of 1979 for him to be selected to play for the England Schools’ 19 Group on a summer tour to Australia and New Zealand. He played in all three test matches and may have captained them on at least one occasion.
In 1977 I was appointed House Master of the Green House as successor to David Trott. Andy was a Sixth Former then and a great role model for the junior members of the House. In his final year at BGS he was appointed Head Boy for the spring and summer terms of 1979.
As well as being an excellent all round games player Andy was a very capable academic student who studied sciences in the Sixth Form and later went on to become a doctor, having trained at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London.
As a person Andy was, in my experience, a delightful and genuine character. He was always courteous, engaging, kind and extremely modest of his many achievements. He commanded respect on the games field which made him a great leader and I would imagine that this was reflected in his professional life after he left school.
His early death has come as a great shock to the many people who knew him and I am sure that the wider BGS community will join with me in sending their sincere condolences to his family at this very sad time.

Bristol Grammar School are sad to confirm the recent death of former student Andrew Dun. Please click the above links to read more about Andy's links to Bristol rugby and his business Medneo.
Andrew Frederick Dun was educated at Bristol Grammar School. He captained the First XV and was a school contemporary of future Bristol star Simon Hogg. A strong and athletic back row forward, he captained Bristol for two seasons from 1988, having previously won a single England cap as a Wasps player. He was the father of current Bears player James Dun.
Andy Dun was extremely popular with his fellow players. He was an avid supporter of James during his rugby development and was a proud man when James made his Bristol debut.
After qualification as a GP in Trowbridge, he first worked on mobilisation plans for GPs and then moved to the world of diagnostics. In imaging he created a new model and design of pathways for national coverage. Andy then moved seamlessly across into domiciliary care, education and residential homes for children with complex and behavioural needs as well as a range of other organisations which all helped people live better lives.
Andy was an excellent communicator who could make a room of people think differently in seconds. He had an ability to make people love what they were doing and to make work enjoyable. - Medneo
