Extracts from Chronicle

HEADMASTER’S NOTES After three years at the Grammar School, Mr. G. D. Lang leaves us at the end of this term for a Lectureship at Redland College of Education. His contribution not only to the work of the Economics Department but also to the School’s music has been a notable one and we are glad that since he will still be in Bristol we may hope that his connection with B.G.S. music is not at an end. Mr. M. L. Statham has given much help with cross-country and athletics as well as with such activities as the Ten Tors Expedition and now goes to be Deputy Warden of Brathay Hall Adventure Centre. We offer both of them our thanks and best wishes for the future.

So far this term Mr. Lang and Mr. Rusbridge have performed Dvorak’s Sonatinain G and Beethoven’s Sonata in D for violin and piano; Mr. Beecroft and Mr. Rusbridgehave played Schubert’s Grand Sonata in B, for piano duet and also Faure’s Dolly Suite and some of Bizet’s Jeux d’enfants; Mr. Beecroft played two Haydn sonatas for the piano; and Mr. Warren introduced some of his favourite records.

Mr. Lyon and Mr. Jenkins have organised School swimming, together with Mr. Lang, who has arranged life-saving, and personalsurvival classes and examinations. To these gentlemen we are indebted, as we are to all the Bath's Staff, particularly "Ron" and Mr. Mogg.

A visitor from Bristol University, Mr. Lang, who has this term joined the staff, proved himself to be an able violinist, tackling passages of technical difficulty with clear musical sense, andaccomplishing the acrobatics of the last movement with competence. Two recitals are planned for the rest of this term: violin sonatas are probably to be included in the programme, when we shall again be calling upon Mr. Lang's services.

There was an invited orchestra under the leadership of George Lang, a quartet of soloists, and, seated at the organ, poised for action, was Robin Baggs. The scene was set for an evening's music in the English Choral Tradition.
